Raithby Remedial Reading Programme

The Raithby Reading Programme is about reaching out to Raithby Primary School, a small Afrikaans medium school in the middle of the Winelands, between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. The school struggles to meet the Western Cape Education Department’s requirements for Literacy and this year they also have to do without a Learning Support Teacher.

With help and support from ECHO, Helette Norval sees 30 struggling readers from the Foundation Phase, in groups of no more than 5, for an hour per week. Her focus is on language experience and a holistic and integrated approach to reading where the children experience a lot of success and have fun at the same time. The main problems she has identified thus far, is the children’s lack of phonemic awareness and fluency and she tries to work on that on a constant basis. It is also one of her goals to reach out to the teachers. She has already done two demonstration lessons in classrooms, with the teacher’s watching and is planning to do at least two a term.

Helette says that she has enjoyed getting the Programme up and running. And that she looks forward to see how she can support these children in becoming stronger readers and thus achieve better academic goals for themselves.
