IMG_20160304_223036Young Bafana Soccer Academy was inaugurated in 2010 when the founder, Bernd Steinhage, decided to turn his passion into a career and change the lives of disadvantaged children in South Africa.  Currently there are 120 Academy members and 10 support staff, which includes full-time and part-time coaches, an administrator and interns, mainly from overseas, who spend 3 – 6 months with the academy.

DSC_0148The Academy provides a challenging and enriching environment for beneficiaries between the ages of 5 and 19.  The focus is on holistic development through soccer, life-skills and educational programmes which assist in preparing beneficiaries to apply for scholarships and to pursue a professional soccer career.  Beneficiaries are collected from their homes and transported to various locations for soccer practice, tutoring or other activities and are also supplied with food packs. The tutoring occurs 3 times per week, two English lessons and one Maths lesson per week before taking the field for practice.

The coaching style encourages the soccer players to use their initiative, make sound decisions and take responsibility for their actions on and off the field.   Currently the educational outreach programme provides English and Maths tutoring and in the future the Young Bafana Academy would like to be in a position to offer customised tutoring to beneficiaries who are struggling with specific academic subjects.

Young Bafana beat Ajax Cape Town, 5:3 last year and 3:0 this year in the U17 age group.
